Clear explanations, too few exercises
Japanese grammar can be quite opaque. The explanations in this book are clear and we'll organised. Unfortunately, they are not backed up by many exercises to practise with. A long explanation is given, and then just three or four practice sentences follow it. It looks as though the practice exercises were just tacked on after the book of explanations was written.

I would not say this is for true beginners
This is a workbook and so that is really helpful. You can take it with you and do not need any extra paper etc as you just write in the book. There are good summarizing sections on numbers, counting, holidays/events, animals, plants, places, telephone numbers, basic conversations, and reading which is all very useful. Could be used as a good review by anyone with late beginner to intermediate Japanese who perhaps had not practiced in a while. However, by page 30 you will start seeing kanji and by 130 you will see whole passages in kanji so for true beginners this is a bit challenging. The romaji is given for the kanji but the kana is not. It would have been nice to have all three once the kanji started so you could read the kana and associate it with the specific reading context of the kanji as there is no furigana. Having just the romaji is ok but does not reinforce your reading and recognition of kana which is essential to beginners. You will be constantly translating romaji to kana in your head which does not help you think in Japanese.

Great beginner resource
Book could probably be better, but it alone could also prolly teach you everything you need to eke by while living in another country. It includes the basic Japanese grammar and characters, and it also includes vital vocab about things like dr. visits, directions, etc.

Used this book after passively floating through Human Japanese 1/2 (which was great, but I didn't get as much as I should have). I highly recommend it.Pros:-Short lessons followed immediately by short exercises to cement it in place.-Has kanji (the intimidatingly complicated picture words used EVERYWHERE in real Japanese) in it, but not everything is kanji.-lots of vocab (introduced and then put into practice)-Tells you on the back that after finishing this book, you should be an 'advanced beginner,' which is useful for choosing what your next step will beCons:-There is no hirigana translation for the kanji, just the romaji (english letters spelling out the pronuncation of the word), which is fine with me, but others don't like.In response to the reviewer who says that this is a phrase book with no real explanation, I didn't feel that way at all.

Great Book!
I really really like this book. I am traveling to Japan in 3 months and I believe its always a good idea to get accustomed to the language especially if you're going to live there for 2+months. This is a great introduction to Basic Japanese and bought it with another book on the Hiragana and Katakana Alphabet. So they really work together. The book was shipped on time and the condition was great!

Great book to begin learning.
This is a pretty good deal on a begining level book. It can be used no matter how much you don't know or already know because everything is written in romaji, kana , and kanji along with a translation.

Systematic coverage.
This book covers a lot of ground and has helped to de-mystify some elements of Japanese grammar that I hadn't been able to grasp with other books. My only wish is that there could be more exercises to help cement the knowledge with comprehensive drills (as other PMP publications do). There are some occasional misprints as well, which have the potential to be confusing, so better proof-reading would help too. It's worth buying this in conjunction with Practice Makes Perfect Complete Japanese Grammar (Practice Makes Perfect Series) :there is some overlap, of course, but using the two together gives a result that's greater than the sum of its parts. Practice Makes Perfect Complete Japanese Grammar (Practice Makes Perfect Series)

Excellent Starting Point
Very happy with this book, could do with a few more exercises to help demonstrate a few of the ideas but as a starting point; very good.

Doesn't work on Kindle
Eriko Sato seems to have cornered the market on Japanese grammar books (ie Dymystified; for Dummies) so it was difficult to know which to chose. This seems the simplest as I only want to do up to N4 at this stage, but unfortunately all the Japanese characters and the tables are images and they cut off on the right side for Kindle and in some cases are too small to read.Bought her Japanese Dy-mystified hard copy which also has a CD
