1 Minute, Large

The Teacher Created Resources 1 Minute Sand Timer is a durable, accurate, moderately large and stable (i.e., does not tip easily) sand timer. It is perfect for encouraging kids to brush their teeth and for timing activities that divide up into 1 minute intervals. Just flip the timer each time it empties to reset for another minute. This timer is best suited for activities that take up to 4 minutes to complete. I use it for teeth brushing and also for Dungeons & Dragons role-playing games. In the latter case, if players are taking too long to make a decision, I pull out this timer and tell them they have 1 minute to make up their minds (sometimes 2 minutes, if I'm feeling generous). It's a great way to apply pressure to speed things along and keep the game from getting bogged down, especially when playing with easily-distracted kids. It can also be used for impromptu character penalties, such as telling a player that his/her character is blind, immobilized, unconscious, etc. for a certain number of minutes, instead of a number of turns. Sometimes, a time-based penalty works better than keeping track of turns, and watching/flipping the timer gives that character something to do, while creating a sense of tension/drama for the rest of the party as they try to compensate for the handicap for a set amount of time. Anyway, whatever your needs, this is a good choice in an accurate, durable, easy-to-see (colorful) sand timer. Mine clocked in at almost exactly 60 seconds, so I would even trust it for precise cooking purposes if that's your goal. Of course, it you're timing multiple-minute activities, you just have to be diligent about flipping it the moment the upper glass runs out.

They're tough, big and kids love them. I use them as time out timers and still they are somehow one of the most popular toys in the daycare. These ones are made of durable plastic and, unlike the other ones I bought previously - these have the phrase "3 minutes" (in my case) screen printed on instead of stickered on. This is clutch since kids rip off stickers. \ A word to the manufacturer - making the top and bottom different would be great so that I can tell which side the timer is on. I mark mine myself with a star - so that when I put the star on top I can just hand the kid the timer with the star right side up and say " give this to me when the sand is in the bottom " then the more they play around the more they find out. :)

I LOVE using these for my PE classes. It allows for me to direct the students to “take a break” during those tough moments, and gives them a visual on their time remaining until they have the opportunity to come back into the activity. Helpful for me as well, so I have one less thing to focus on and can stay accountable on not keeping a student out for too long. DURABLE- these have been slung around my gymnasium over a dozen times through the school year and they don’t break beyond what some little floor tap can bandaid up. Both layers are THICK plastic which is nice because nothing is going to be shattered. I’ve only had minor cracks during tantrums when students have spiked them into the ground. I wish they weren’t so expensive (or they were bundled together better so u got more for the money instead of having them be $10+ for each one but still worth it.

Love this Sand timer. I got the blue 2 minute timer. Love that it's large and my children can't loose it easily or break it. I have a 2 year old boy and a 3 year old girl. They will often fight over the same toy and of course I try to talk them into "sharing" the toy which no body ever wants to do! Since they really have no concept of time yet, I use this timer to settle the fights. I say one person can have the toy for 2 minutes and when the sand runs out, they have to switch. It's actually worked great! Sometimes they get so intrigues with watching the sand, they forget all about the actual toy they were fighting over! I chose the 2 minutes one for their current age since I thought any more time than that would be asking them for too much patience. As they grow, I'll probably upgrade to higher minutes also ;)

I use as a rest timer in between sets for my weight training (I have a set of them). Much more peaceful and relaxing than staring at a digital timer, and a great way to measure an interval that doesn't need precision to the second. This is a high quality product that has stood up over time and lots of use. The highest accidental drop was about 2 feet, and it shows no signs of damage. I love using these with my abacus to count sets and measure intervals, it just feels like a less stressful and better way to do it... old school! I would buy this again 100 times if needed.

I ordered the 1 minute, 2 minute, and 5 minute timers to use in my special education preschool classroom. I really like that all the timers are the same size because I have used them to get my students to complete a task and I can easily start with 1 minute, and gradually increase the amount of time I require a child to do a task as they get better at it. Since the timers are the same size the children don't notice the time difference. They are great for kids to be able to look and have a visual of how much time is left. Some of our students have liked to watch the sand timers as a reinforcement to complete a task. My children are not old enough yet, but I think they will be very useful at home as well! The plastic around the outside of the hour glass is not as sturdy as I would have hoped, and they are a little bit pricey, but in my opinion they were well worth the money and I would recommend them to other teachers or parents!

I got this for students who take short breaks--much easier than setting a timer and having it go off and disturb everyone. With this, I can see if it runs out even if I'm not right next to it. It runs for a little bit over 3 minutes. It's a little expensive, but it is getting daily use, and it is holding up well. The hexagon style of the end pieces is also nice--my student realized that we can "pause" the timer by laying it down! Clever!

These timers are an absolute godsend...they're essential for little ones (my grandson is 2.5 yrs) to understand the concept of 'time'...we show him that we're turning over the timer, and when the sand is all at the bottom, that activity ends, and we move on to the next activity...this has worked so beautifully for: giving him 10 minutes until bedtime/nap time...5 minutes more and then we get out of the bath...10 more minutes and we have to go into the house, etc. Nobody likes to be 'plucked' out of what they're doing, and this allows the child to understand that he has some more time to do what he's doing, but then we must move on. We rarely have any 'battles'...the deal is, when the sand is all gone, we do what Mommy/Daddy/Grandma said we have to do. It also works for 'time outs' when they're needed....I believe every parent of toddlers needs to have a complete set of these...and btw, I'm NOT related to the company, nor did I receive anything for free to give my review. We have three of these timers (2 min-5 min and 10 min) at both my son's home and mine...they get used multiple times a day.

Developed a spontaneous crack on first day of use as it stood unattended on a desk. I am in South Africa. Very hot here and perhaps just not meant for the weather here ?

Works really well and is super durable! Been using it with Grade 1 and 2 for a few years and it has held up!
